The University Libraries offer academic resources and services that are integral to the mission of the University. The library faculty works closely with the University faculty in support of research and classroom teaching. An emphasis on information literacy instruction by the library faculty complements the University’s goal to help students develop life-long learning skills. The Academic Commons on the first floor of the I.D. Weeks Building unites library, technology, and academic support services in one convenient location with a variety of individual and collaborative study spaces and computers. Academic and Career Planning Center, Center for Academic Engagement, University Writing Center, Presentation Center, Lab Consultant, ITS Help Desk, and all library services are open generous hours to assist students with their academic endeavors. Students may make appointments to see an advisor or tutor online in advance. Students can see how many computers are available throughout the building through a live web-based feed. A variety of individual and group study spaces and rooms are available for drop-in use or may be reserved in advance through the campus scheduling system, including e-collaborative rooms, a digital editing suite, and media viewing rooms. The I. D. Weeks Building is connected to the Muenster University Center, which houses dining services, bookstore, and student services and activities. The complex is open 118.5 hours per week.

The University Libraries contain nationally-recognized resources on Native Americans, significant art and humanities collections, and in-depth K-12 education materials. The Archives and Special Collections department holds extensive 19th century Western Americana, primary historical materials such as senatorial papers, Wounded Knee massacre and siege materials, and other unique items. The University Libraries’ physical collections include 640,843 bound book and journal volumes, 741,068 microforms, 313,555 government documents, 28,833 audiovisual items, and 9,278 e-books. Over 95% of the journal subscriptions are available online (261 print, 44,357 electronic). Online journal holdings range from the complete archive, back to the inception of a journal title, to a more limited range of current years. The Research Gateway and Journal List found on the library website help users determine quickly whether an article is available in full-text through our databases or journal subscriptions. The Journal List includes e-books, which can be searched with the journals or separately. The web-based interlibrary loan request service (ILLiad) enables users to request materials not available in the University Libraries, which often arrive within hours. Nearly all of the online resources and services (including the online catalog, full-text holdings, and 292 databases) are available 24/7 from anywhere in the world to members of the University population with a current USD email address.

Located on all three floors of the east end of the Law School building, the McKusick Law Library is the largest law library in South Dakota, containing more than 210,000 volumes of primary and secondary legal materials. It also has a number of electronic databases, most of which, because of licensing agreements, are restricted to use by law students and faculty members. Its collection of books is open to the public, but most of the volumes do not circulate. The particular strengths of the collection are in Indian Law, Natural Resources Law, and Health Law.

The students and faculty members of the Law School are the law library’s primary clientele, but the law library also serves the University’s academic community, the State Bar, and all the citizens of South Dakota. Its location in the southeastern corner of the state also attracts patrons from Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska.
