The mission of The Division of Continuing and Distance Education (CDE) is to bring the academic resources of the University to the citizens of South Dakota, the region, and beyond. Among other things, the Division of Continuing and Distance Education provides students the opportunity to obtain a degree, advance their credentials, or simply learn more about a topic of interest. The University of South Dakota, is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission (http://www.ncahlc.org/) to extend face-to-face and videoconference courses and programs to Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Pierre, Watertown, Yankton, South Dakota and to Sioux City, Iowa. Moreover, CDE extends courses and programs online and via correspondence study giving students the opportunity to learn anytime and anywhere. The Division of Continuing and Distance Education at The University of South Dakota coordinates Summer School and arranges unique faculty-led travel and manages TRIO Programs. Finally, CDE facilitates testing services, community education programs and contract education for business, industry, and non-profit organizations.

 Summer School

The Division of Continuing and Distance Education coordinates Summer School for on campus, off-campus, and through distance learning at The University of South Dakota. Summer school courses are offered in a variety of academic disciplines. These courses may be offered face-to-face at The University of South Dakota campus in Vermillion, SD and at higher education centers in Sioux City, Iowa, and in Watertown, Pierre, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Students may also enroll in summer school courses online, through correspondence, or videoconference delivery.

 Community Education

The Division of Continuing and Distance Education provides unique, non-credit community education courses for the citizens of Vermillion, South Dakota and the surrounding areas. Through a partnership with the Vermillion School District, community education courses on a wide variety of interesting topics are offered at various locations in Vermillion, South Dakota. The community education courses offered vary each semester. Past community education courses include computer skills, ballroom dancing, gardening, weaving, and many other exciting courses.

 Customized and Professional Education

The Division of Continuing and Distance Education offers a variety of courses which can be delivered as is or customized to meet an organization’s needs. CDE works in partnership with business leaders to jointly develop and deliver customized educational learning opportunities to meet the needs of the organization’s strategic goals.

 Testing Services

The Division of Continuing and Distance Education offers various graduate placement examinations: GRE (Graduate Record Examination) subject tests, LSAT (Law School Admission Test), and MPRE (Multi-state Professional Responsibility Examination). CDE also offers the national ACT Assessment and the residual ACT tests, as well as the College Level Examination Program (CLEP).

TRIO Programs

The Division of Continuing and Distance Education coordinates TRIO Programs. TRIO Programs are a set of federally-funded college opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree. Over 850,000 low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities — from sixth grade through college graduation — are served by more than 2,800 programs nationally. TRIO programs provide academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary for educational access and retention. TRIO programs provide direct support services for students, and relevant training for directors and staff.
