Division of Educational Administration

The graduate programs in Educational Administration are designed to prepare individuals for positions in school administration and in adult and higher education. Programs in school administration prepare individuals for positions that include school district superintendents, assistant superintendents, directors of special education, directors of curriculum, and elementary, middle, and secondary principals. Programs in adult and higher education prepare individuals for positions that include administrative and teaching positions in colleges and universities, junior and community colleges, hospitals, private industry, and other adult training and educational settings.

EDAD Divisional Philosophy is to create reflective leaders. Reflective leaders are skilled educators whose practices and decisions draw upon the best available theory, research, and experiential wisdom. Reflective decision-making engages administrators in cycles of thought and action based on theoretical, ethical, and professional knowledge. The Division of Educational Administration is committed to preparing reflective leaders.

Successful completion of EDAD programs (with the exception of AHED) does lead to administrative certification or endorsement for those individuals who have three year of successful classroom teaching with the appropriate practitioner’s license. Students are encouraged to consult with their state Department of Education about specific licensure requirements for their state.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS (for Master’s and Specialist in addition to those of the School of Education)

  • It is required that applicants seeking certification as a principal or superintendent have at least one year of teaching experience for the Master’s and three years of teaching experience for the Specialist.
  • It is required that applicants for the Specialist degree possess an earned Master’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from an accredited graduate program. Applicants in the final semester of their Master’s program may be admitted into the Specialist program contingently, with full admission being granted upon completion of the Master’s program if all other admission requirements are met.
  • It is required that applicants seeking certification as a Director of Special Education have a Special Education Teacher endorsement (e.g., resource room, self-contained class) and have three years of teaching experience with one year teaching experience in the area of special education (or a year of working with special needs students in the role of speech and language clinician, school psychologist or other support personnel who possess an elementary or secondary teaching certificate and endorsement in special education).
  • The GRE General Test is not required for admission to the Master’s or Specialist degree programs.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS (for Doctor of Education in addition to those of the School of Education)

  • It is required that applicants seeking certification as a principal or superintendent have at least three years of teaching experience.
  • It is required that applicants for the Doctor of Education degree possess an earned Master’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from an accredited graduate program. Applicants in the final semester of their Master’s program may be admitted into the Doctor of Education program contingently, with full admission being granted upon completion of the Master’s program if all other admission requirements are met.
  • It is required that applicants seeking certification as a Director of Special Education have a Special Education Teacher endorsement (e.g., resource room, self-contained class) and have three years of teaching experience with one year teaching experience in the area of special education (or a year of working with special needs students in the role of speech and language clinician, school psychologist or other support personnel who possess an elementary or secondary teaching certificate and endorsement in special education).
  • The GRE General Test is required. A minimum current GRE score of 155 Verbal, 145 Quantitative (530 Verbal and 530 Quantitative on the old GRE score), and Analytic Writing score of 4.0 or above is required for full admission.

- Subject to EDAD faculty approval and the approval of the Graduate Dean, appropriate professional and/or academic experience may complement current or past GRE official test scores to enable applicants who do not meet all of the criteria above to be admitted on a provisional basis.
