The University of South Dakota offers several graduate degrees that are highly interdisciplinary in nature, and are therefore administered directly through The Graduate School instead of within a specific academic department. Additionally, several opportunities for international study exist through Graduate Exchange courses.

The Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) degree began in 1977. It is designed primarily for, but not limited to, non–traditional students who would like to develop their own program of study. The students self design a curriculum to best suit their individual needs.

The Master of Natural Science (MNS) degree is designed for individuals who hold a secondary teaching certificate and who seek additional training in math and science areas in which they were not primarily educated. The program is designed to be flexible and to fit most teachers’ summer schedule.

Biomedical engineering (BME) focuses upon the application of engineering and science methodologies to the analysis of biological and physiological problems and to the development and delivery of health-care technologies. The biomedical engineer serves as an interface between traditional engineering disciplines and living systems and may work in either direction, applying the patterns of living organisms to engineering design or engineering new approaches to human health. Both the Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees are cross-disciplinary degrees. The objective of the M.S. program is to prepare a student for research and development careers in biomedical industry and for additional training at the doctoral level. The Ph.D. program will prepare a student for a career as a researcher who advances the frontiers of biomedical science and engineering with attention to generating new ideas for commercialization.

Members of the faculty from across the University teach in this program. Course work and faculty members come from disciplines such as Business Administration, Health Services Administration, Public Administration, Civic Leadership, Industrial Psychology, Communication Studies, Criminal Justice, Counseling, Guidance and Personnel Services.

Study Abroad and Exchange Courses

International travel and study abroad enhance your resume with experiences and skills that are difficult to obtain in any other way. There are numerous exciting and educational study abroad opportunities available at USD and most are open to graduate and professional students. These exchange experiences may be during the semester or summer.

USD holds sponsored exchange programs in Wales, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France, Hungary, Japan, among others. In most cases, USD students pay USD tuition and receive credit toward their program of study. To determine if study abroad is possible or appropriate for their program, students should consult with their graduate advisor.
