36 MAJOR HOURS, 120 DEGREE HOURS

The concept of sustainability encompasses a wide range of topics and endeavors, including economic development, population, food security, ecosystems, energy, industry, and conflict resolution. Its unifying core is a commitment to development that can be sustained over time while preserving the health of both human society and the environment.

Students majoring in Sustainability will be prepared to pursue careers in the private sector or government in the areas of sustainable practices, natural resource management, renewable energy, community planning, non-governmental organizations focused on sustainable development, and education.

USD’s Sustainability major includes a choice of two specializations, both of which are available as either a B.A. or a B.S. A minor in Sustainability is also available.

Sustainability Core Requirements (18 hours)


Take one of the following courses (1cr):


SUST 494-Sustainability Internship
SUST 496-Sustainability Field Experience
SUST 498-Sustainability Undergraduate Research

Specialization Areas


 Students must choose one of the following two specializations.

*Courses taken to fulfill requirements in the Sustainability core will not also count as electives within the specialization.
