Master of Arts, English Plan A (thesis): Total 30 credit hours


  • Required Core 18 credit hours
  • Thesis 6 credit hours
  • Electives 6 credit hours
     

Master of Arts, English Plan B (non–thesis): Total 33-36 credit hours


  • Required Core 18 credit hours
  • Electives/Nondepartmental Requirements 15-18 credit hours
     

Required Core: Total 18 credit hours


  • Early British Literature (6 credit hours)
  • Later British or American Literature (6 credit hours)
  • Language, Writing, and Pedagogy (3 credit hours)
  • Literary Criticism (3 credit hours)
  • At least three courses must be seminars at the 700 or 800 level
  • At least one course must satisfy the Multicultural Literature, Women’s Studies, or Gender requirement.

Electives/Nondepartmental Requirements: Total 6-18 credit hours


Specialization: Literature (Plan A)

Note:

Other requirements include comprehensive examinations. Students should consult the departmental graduate student handbook for additional information. Students in the TESOL specialization are required to complete 80 hours of supervised ESL tutoring or classroom teaching, and must take a course in Speech Communication if they did not complete SPCM 101 or 201 or the equivalent as undergraduates.
