Students in this major must also complete requirements for a degree in the College of Arts & Sciences .

The concept of sustainability encompasses a wide range of topics broadly focused around environmental conservation, economic development, and social justice issues. Its unifying core is a commitment to the development of a more desirable world, one that can be sustained over time while preserving the health of both human society and the environment.

Students majoring in Sustainability will be prepared to pursue careers in the private sector or government in the areas of sustainable practices, natural resource management, renewable energy, community planning, and non-governmental organizations focused on sustainable development or community empowerment.

USD’s Sustainability major includes a choice of two specializations, both of which are available as either a B.A. or a B.S. A minor in Sustainability is also available.

Specialization Areas

Students must choose one of the following two specializations.

Note:

*Courses taken to fulfill requirements in the Sustainability core will not also count as electives within the specialization.
**Inclusion of SUST 491 and 492 in the specializations is subject to approval of the coordinator of the Sustainability Program to ensure suitability for natural or social sciences, respectively.
