Business Administration (M.B.A.)

Admissions Information  

33-60 CREDIT HOURS REQUIRED 

Applicants who enter the program with all 500-level foundation coursework or equivalent courses completed (18 credit hours for the general M.B.A. and M.B.A./HSAD or 21 credit hours for the M.B.A./Business Analytics) will be given “advanced standing” and will only need to complete the 33 credit hours of advanced course work [M.B.A., or M.B.A./HSAD Plan A (thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis)] or 39 credit hours of advanced coursework for the M.B.A./Business Analytics. Therefore, an applicant who has not completed any business coursework will have a 51-credit hour program of study (general M.B.A. or M.B.A./HSAD) or 60-credit hour program of study (M.B.A./Business Analytics). Applicants who have completed some of the foundations coursework, either at USD or as part of their undergraduate program, will have an individualized program of study that falls within the 33 to 51 credit range (general M.B.A. and M.B.A./HSAD) or 39 to 60 credit range (M.B.A./Business Analytics).

M.B.A., Plan A (thesis): Total 33 credit hours


  • Business Core 27 credit hours or HSAD Core 30 credit hours
  • Thesis 6 credit hours; 3 credit hours for HSAD Specialization

M.B.A., Plan B (non-thesis): Total 33-39 credit hours


  • Business Core 27 credit hours or HSAD Core 30 credit hours or Business Analytics Core 39 credit hours
  • Business-related supporting courses 6 credit hours; 3 credit hours for HSAD Specialization; no additional hours needed for Business Analytics

 

Note


- All students take a core which addresses the business enterprise and how it functions.  These core courses are open only to M.B.A. and M.P.A. candidates. With approval of the M.B.A. Program Coordinator, electives may be chosen from any courses offered for graduate credit by the University.

M.B.A./Health Services Administration Specialization


The M.B.A./HSAD (Health Services Administration) specialization combines management education with health services administration to prepare students for careers in health care management.

M.B.A./Business Analytics Specialization-Plan B (non-thesis) 39-60 credit hours


Online Master of Business Administration Program:


An online, part-time M.B.A. program is offered to serve the needs of working professionals unable to take face-to-face courses. Online courses are offered so that students can complete the program in as little as two years (after completing foundation courses or their equivalents). The program is enhanced by a rich, five-day residency experience which takes place each spring in Sioux Falls, SD.  Students may select in which semester they complete the residency portion of the program. The online program is comparable to the face-to-face program; admissions and graduation requirements are identical and courses in each modality are taught by the same faculty.

Hybrid Master of Business Administration Program:


A part-time M.B.A. program is offered face-to-face in Vermillion and Sioux Falls with classes scheduled in the evenings to meet the needs of working professionals. The part-time Vermillion and Sioux Falls programs can be completed in as little as two years (after completing foundations courses or their equivalents).  Students in the hybrid program can take online, face-to-face, and hybrid classes. The part-time program is comparable to the face-to-face program; admissions and graduation requirements are identical, and courses in each modality are taught by the same faculty.

Joint M.B.A./J.D.


It is possible to concurrently pursue an M.B.A. in the Beacom School of Business and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in the USD School of Law. Nine credits of 700- level M.B.A. coursework may be counted toward the J.D. degree (if both degrees are pursued concurrently). Additionally, nine hours of law coursework may be counted toward the M.B.A. degree.
