Biology, Physiology and Structure Specialization (B.A., B.S.)

Departmental Requirements (38 hours)


All Students complete the Principles sequence (BIOL 161, 162, 163, 164) during their initial four semesters. Students who choose to pursue a major in Biology after completing the BIOL 101/103 sequence (non-science majors courses) will be required to complete at least two of the Principles courses listed below.

  • 1 course from Structure Group 3cr
  • Topical Senior Seminar 1cr
  • Other Biology Electives 6+cr

Note


Biology Course Groups for classification of courses within biological topics. Courses must include at least one course from the Cell group and one course from the Function/Physiology group. Additionally, students must complete a writing course and two lab courses, at least one of which must be from the Structure or Function/Physiology Groups and one must be a Botany lab course.

Special Ways of Obtaining Credit


Following the procedures in the Registrar’s Office, students may receive up to 8 credit hours (but no grade) that count toward the Biology major or minor, and toward the fulfillment of the natural sciences requirement (B.A. or B.S.) and the 128 credit hour requirement. Credit is acceptable for Medical Technology, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, etc. Credits earned through the CLEP test may substitute for credits toward the major and as a prerequisite for more advanced courses in biology. For those students submitting a score of at least 3 in Advanced Placement, College Board, 4-8 credit hours of Biology will be assigned in accordance with BOR policy.

Students may count up to 6 credit hours from upper-division BIOC and MICR courses toward the Biology major. Students majoring in Nursing, Dental Hygiene, or Medical Technology only: Seven credit hours from selected ANAT, PHGY, or MICR courses may be credited toward the Biology major or minor.
