Work, leisure and recreation are inter-related constructs that are integral to the quality of human life. The study of the field of Parks and Recreation encompasses activities ranging from aerobics, arts and crafts, and performing arts, to camping, outdoor recreation and sports. Park and Recreation professionals plan, organize, budget, and direct these and other activities in local playgrounds, community centers, parks (local, state and national), private, quasi-public and voluntary organizations (e.g. YMCA’s, Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs), health clubs, fitness centers, religious organizations, camps, theme parks, and tourist attractions. Increasingly, park and recreation professionals are also found in the workplace, where they organize and direct leisure activities, athletic programs and fitness activities for employees of all ages.
Certification in the recreation field is offered by the National Park and Recreation Association (NRPA) National Certification Board. The NRPA, along with its state chapters, offers certification as a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) for those with a college degree in recreation. Other NRPA certifications include Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) and Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO).
