  • DCOM 725 - OAEs AND BALANCE FUNCTION TESTING


    3 cr hrs

    Description This course will cover the underlying scientific principles and administration/interpretation of otoacoustic emissions and balance function testing.  Emphasis will be placed on integration of special test outcomes with presenting complaints, otologic sequelae, and results of basic audiologic and site-of-lesion test measures.

  • DCOM 726 - ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF HEARING

    Description Course content will include the detailed study of the structure and function of the peripheral auditory mechanism from the external ear to the cochlear and vestibular end organs. Emphasis will be placed on the physiologic and biomolecular bases of acoustic signal transduction and transmission.

    Description Course content will consist of theories and methods of audiologic screening, assessment, and intervention in the infant and child population, including early intervention strategies. The course will focus in depth on assessment modifications indicated for children of different ages and the role of the pediatric and/or educational audiologist in the assessment of hearing disorders in children.

  • DCOM 728 - CENTRAL AUDITORY NEUROPHYSIOLOGY AND ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY

    Description This course consists of the detailed study of the structure and function of the central auditory nervous system (CANS). Special emphasis will be placed on the neurophysiologic bases of speech perception signal averaging theory, and the utility of auditory event related potentials in the assessment of functional integrity of the CANS from auditory nerve to cortex.

    Description This course will orient the student to current perspectives in and methods of screening for, differentially diagnosing, and managing central auditory processing disorders from a multidisciplinary perspective. Although the primary focus of this course will be auditory processing disorders in school-aged children and the role of various members of the educational team (e.g., audiologist, speech-language pathologist, educational psychologist, special educator, and others), information also will be applicable to the adult population.

By the end of the course, the student’s experience will culminate in the design of an original, capstone research project.

    Description Experimental analyses are covered including factorial and mixed-model ANOVA and ANCOVA, non-linear models, logistic regression, the General Linear Model.
