Students using the University Libraries have ready access to an abundance of scholarly and research materials that support the variety of courses offered by the University. The library collections include one million paper and digital books, supplemented by one-and-a-half million microforms, government documents, and audiovisual materials. The Archives and Special Collections department houses collections on 19th century Western Americana, official papers of past South Dakota politicians, papers related to the Wounded Knee massacre and occupation, rare books, and other unique items. The Oral History Center houses one of the largest collections of Oral Histories in the United States. The materials related to Native Americans held in the collections are also nationally recognized.

Students using the University Libraries benefit from highly trained faculty and staff that oversee all aspects of the library operations. The library faculty work closely with other University faculty to support classroom teaching and research. Students will receive information literacy instruction that will contribute to their academic success and help them develop life-long learning skills.

Students using the University Libraries materials are increasingly able to do so online. Over 99% of the active journal subscriptions are available online and the number of eBooks is growing. Users can see what materials are in the collection from the search features on the library homepage, and then link to the available online materials. Users can also request materials held in other libraries via the ILLiad interlibrary loan system. Articles that can be sent electronically are often received in a few hours.

The I.D. Weeks Building houses the above-mentioned collections, spaces for individuals and groups to study, and is the home to other offices that support student learning including the Academic and Career Planning Center, the Gallagher Center for Experiential Learning & Education Abroad, the Writing Center, the Presentation Center, and the ITS Help Desk. The Theodore R. and Karen K. Muenster University Center is connected to the I.D. Weeks Building putting additional study space, dining services and many campus events a short walk away.

Located on all three floors of the east end of the Law School building, the McKusick Law Library is the largest law library in South Dakota, containing the equivalent of approximately 85,000 volumes of primary and secondary legal materials. It also has a number of electronic databases providing access to a variety of legal resources. Some electronic resources, because of licensing agreements, are restricted to use by law students and law faculty.  However, a growing number of databases are available for use by university faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and walk-in patrons.  While hours vary during breaks, holidays and the summer, the Law Library is generally open to the public and larger USD community year-round, Monday through Friday, 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.

The students and faculty members of the Law School are the law library’s primary clientele, but the law library also serves the University’s academic community, the State Bar, and all the citizens of South Dakota. Its location in the southeastern corner of the state also attracts patrons from Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska.
