University Libraries
The institution provides to students and instructors the infrastructure and resources necessary to support effective teaching and learning (technological infrastructure, scientific laboratories, libraries, performance spaces, clinical practice sites, museum collections, as appropriate to the institution’s offerings).
The University Libraries system is comprised of the I.D. Weeks Library on the Vermillion campus and the Wegner Health Sciences Library on the USD Sanford School of Medicine campus, which is the only academic health sciences and biomedical library in South Dakota. Library services are integrated with academic support services on the USD-Sioux Falls campus. The University Libraries collaborates with the USD McKusick Law Library, the only academic law library in South Dakota, to support the research, publication and service activities of the Knudson School of Law faculty, students, and staff. The University Libraries shares a secure, climate-controlled facility-the Center for Preservation and Research-with the National Music Museum.
All faculty, students, and staff, both on-campus and online, have access to the University Libraries’ extensive range of services, including cloud-based search and discovery systems, information literacy services, research assistance and consultation services, and interlibrary loan services; extensive holdings in print and electronic books, electronic journals, streaming video and audio files, and digital primary sources. Specialized services for students and faculty include Open Access publishing services through the institutional repository (RED), the Digital Scholarship and Research Services program, which hosts a virtual reality lab, Archives and Special Collections, the USD Photograph Collection, the South Dakota Oral History Center, the Digital Humanities initiative, and the Digital Imaging Lab. Consortium and cooperative memberships of the University Libraries include OCLC, Lyrasis, SPARC, and Minitex. The University Libraries is a library of the Federal Depository Library Program and a member library within the National Network of Libraries of Medicine of the National Library of Medicine. At the state level, the University Libraries is a member of the Regental Library Consortium, and thus shares an online search and discovery (Ex Libris Alma Primo) system with other South Dakota campuses.
The University Libraries’ collections include over 1.5 million physical and electronic books and journals, streaming video and audio files, datasets, and digital primary sources.

Located on two floors of the east end of the Law School building, the McKusick Law Library is the largest law library in South Dakota. The majority of the Law Library’s print collection is housed in its lower level. The Law Library also has a number of electronic databases providing access to a variety of legal resources. Some electronic resources, because of licensing agreements, are restricted to use by law students and law faculty. However, a growing number of databases are available for use by university faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and walk-in patrons. While hours vary during breaks, holidays and the summer, the Law Library is generally open to the public and larger USD community year-round, Monday through Friday, 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.
The students and faculty members of the Law School are the law library’s primary clientele, but the law library also serves the University’s academic community, the State Bar, and all the citizens of South Dakota. Its location in the southeastern corner of the state also attracts patrons from Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska.
