Financial Aid

^TOP

The Student Financial Aid Office (http://www.usd.edu/finaid/) assists students who lack financial resources to support their education. Students may apply for Title IV financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA, http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/). The FAFSA is available beginning in late December or early January for the following academic year. To receive this form either stop at a student financial aid office at your nearest college, or contact the Student Financial Aid Office in Vermillion (800) 329-2453 and it will be sent to you. The FAFSA must be completed every year the student wishes to receive assistance. To be eligible for a financial aid award in any term (Fall, Spring, or Summer semester), graduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of five credit hours (considered half time). Students with Special Student - Graduate Status are not eligible for financial aid. There are a limited number of scholarships available in various departments. Contact the appropriate department for further information.

Graduate Assistantships

^TOP

Graduate assistantships are available to graduate students on campus. Application forms are available at http://www.usd.edu/graduate-school/graduate-assistantships.cfm. Once the student completes the form, he/she needs to go to the individual office/department of interest for the assistantship. Not only do graduate assistants learn valuable skills that may pertain to their discipline of study, they receive a tuition break as well. Students on assistantships pay tuition at one-third the resident rate (this does not include applicable fees) and students receive a monthly stipend. The amount of the stipend varies depending on the department.

Students holding graduate assistantships may not register for more than twelve semester hours or less than nine hours per semester, without permission of the Graduate Dean. Graduate teaching assistants may be permitted a minimum of six credit hours per semester with the approval of the Graduate Dean. A graduate student in the final semester of enrollment or a summer research assistant may take a reduced load with the approval of the Graduate Dean.

Scholarships Available

Students who are interested in scholarships should contact the program in which they enroll.

Work Study

^TOP

Work study is awarded to students who reflect a need on their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid, http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/). The award usually pays up to $1,000 per year. The student can choose a job that he or she would be most interested in by going to Career Development Center located at the Burr House where there are listings of work-study openings. Graduate students on a graduate assistantship are not eligible for work-study while receiving a stipend.
