The College of Fine Arts promotes programs and activities to develop a high level of professional competency in each individual student. The Fine Arts faculty is comprised of award winning artists and educators that practice the profession that they teach. Several Fine Arts faculty have been nominated by students and selected to receive the University’s prestigious Belbas-Larson Teaching Award. Programs of study include opportunities to acquire technical skills and theoretical information necessary for students to prepare for careers in their chosen field. We promote a sense of personal integrity and social responsibility in students and develop an intellectual basis for successful living. The College recognizes its obligation to provide leadership in the cultural environment of the University, the community, and the state as a whole.
The College is administratively structured to include the departments of Art, Music, and Theatre. The 104,000 square foot building houses the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre, Colton Recital Hall, the University Art Galleries, and numerous studios and related classrooms. The College also administers the Black Hills Playhouse, the University Art Gallery System, National Music Museum and Center for Study of the History of Musical Instruments. The College promotes a wide variety of student-based activities including over 14 musical ensembles and hands-on experience in art and theatre. The College is home to the internationally-known Rawlins Piano Trio and other professional faculty ensembles. The many music ensembles include The Sound of USD Marching Band, USD Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber singers (who have performed in New York and Europe). Scenic, Lighting and Costume design students in the Theatre Department have been invited to perform at the Kennedy Center, and have had regional winners in various competitions with the American College Theatre Festival. The Department of Visual Art hosts the annual Frogman’s Print and Paper Workshop, which brings over 120 artists and printmakers to campus annually. In 2005, a USD Department of Art faculty member received two national teaching awards for Excellence in Teaching, one from the College Art Association and the other from the Southern Graphics Council. All Art faculty are active artists and exhibitors as well as teachers.
The Regents of Education established the College of Fine Arts on September 25, 1930, by combining the College of Music and the Departments of Art and Dramatic Art, and it began functioning in September 1931. The first two Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees were conferred on June 4, 1932.
