Medical coursework began at the University of South Dakota in September of 1907 with the organization of the College of Medicine. The original curriculum consisted of two years of premedical work taken at USD and two years of medical training taken outside of South Dakota. Since then, the School of Medicine has greatly expanded and the University of South Dakota is the only university in the state of South Dakota to offer the four year Medical Doctor Degree.
Over the past decade, an increased emphasis has been made in biomedical research, community medicine and allied health support. The Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota’s faculty are responsible for nearly two-thirds of all competitive grants at the University and work closely with research centers throughout the state and nation.
The Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota provides to its students and to the people of South Dakota excellence in education, research, and service. To these ends, the School is to provide educational pathways leading to both the Doctor of Medicine and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees along with the other degrees offered through the School of Medicine and School of Health Sciences.
