The College of Fine Arts promotes programs and activities to develop a high level of professional competency in each individual student. The Fine Arts faculty is comprised of award-winning artists and educators that practice the profession that they teach. The College of Fine Arts prepares students for life-long engagement with local and global communities through education in Art, Music, or Theatre. Our dedicated faculty inspire students by challenging them to strive for excellence in creative scholarship/research. The College recognizes its obligation to provide leadership in the cultural environment of the University, the community, and the state as a whole.

The College is administratively structured to include the departments of Art, Music, and Theatre. The 104,000 square foot building houses the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre, Colton Recital Hall, the University Art Galleries, and numerous studios and related classrooms. The College also administers the Black Hills Playhouse, the University Art Gallery System, and the National Music Museum. The College promotes a wide variety of student-based activities including over fourteen musical ensembles and hands-on experience in art and theatre. The College is home to the internationally-known Rawlins Piano Trio and other professional faculty ensembles. The many music ensembles include The Sound of USD Marching Band, USD Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber singers (who have performed in New York and Europe). Scenic, Lighting and Costume design students in the Theatre Department have been invited to perform at the Kennedy Center, and have had regional winners in various competitions with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. The Department of Art has a long history of distinguished graduates and is home of the Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute.

The Regents of Education established the College of Fine Arts on September 25, 1930, by combining the College of Music and the Departments of Art and Dramatic Art, and it began functioning in September 1931. The first two Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees were conferred on June 4, 1932.
