Ph.D. in Health Sciences Program Description:

The interprofessional Ph.D. in Health Sciences is designed to prepare practicing health care professionals to assume leadership roles in academia, research, and/or health and human services practice settings.  Designed for working professionals, features of the program include:

  • Up to 30 credits from an institutionally-accredited institution (including USD) may be considered for transfer from a master’s or professional doctorate, subject to approval by the Program Director and the Graduate Committee.
  • Core curriculum comprised of four content threads: Teaching, Leadership and Healthcare Issues, Discipline Related, and Research (including dissertation);
  • Ability to tailor learning to meet individual career aspirations and research interests through elective coursework, projects completed within courses, and the dissertation;
  • Online course delivery with limited expectations for face-to-face contact. Resident experiences include an initial orientation and a one-week Dissertation Boot Camp.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Completed Graduate Application form found at: https://www.usd.edu/grad/how-to-apply and a non-refundable application fee of $35.
  2. Official transcript(s) verifying receipt of an undergraduate degree and previous graduate credit (in English or with translation). Transcripts must be complete (e.g., if currently enrolled, work-in-progress coursework must be included, foreign transcripts must include a grading scale, and for countries that issue, copy of degree certificate/diploma i.e., India, Nepal, etc.). The USD Graduate School and/or academic units retain the right to require credential evaluations from organizations, such as Educational Credential Evaluators/World Education Services (ECE/WES), for a student if such an evaluation is deemed necessary.
  3. Completion of a Master’s or higher degree in health or human services related field from an institution with institutional accreditation for that degree. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 or better on that conferred degree, based on a 4.0 scale. Graduate programs may admit students on provisional status per University policy.
  4. Applicants with degrees from countries other than the United States who have obtained a high school diploma, undergraduate, or graduate degree from an institutionally accredited American college or university or from an accredited institution in the approved list  of English-speaking countries are not required to submit an approved English proficiency exam score. For all other applicants with degrees from other countries, a minimum score of 79 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT), 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT), 8.5 on the TOEFL Essentials, 6.0 on the IELTS Academic, 53 on the PTE, or 110 on Duolingo is required for graduate admission. 
  5. Statement of purpose (embedded questions in GradCAS application) outlining why an applicant is interested in the Ph.D. in Health Sciences program.

Additional Program Admission Requirements:

  1. Three (3) professional letters of recommendation are required.
  2. Successful completion of a criminal background check upon acceptance.

Subject to faculty approval, those who do not meet all of the above criteria may be admitted on a provisional basis.

Application Deadline:

Top candidates who meet the application deadline may be selected for Phase 2, which includes a writing sample. They will receive instructions via email by mid-April. 

The selection process is competitive. A limited number of seats are available annually based on the availability of faculty to serve as dissertation mentors in the applicants’ interest area.


Master of Public Health Program Description:

The Master of Public Health program at the University of South Dakota develops public health practitioners and leaders to address public health needs of rural and underserved communities. Offered online and in partnership with South Dakota State University, the program adopts an interprofessional approach in addressing the five core areas of public health: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services Administration, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Environmental Health. The Master of Public Health degree is the most widely recognized professional credential for practice and leadership in public health.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Completed Graduate Application form found at: https://www.usd.edu/graduate-school/apply-now and a non-refundable application fee of $35.
  2. Official transcript(s) verifying receipt of an undergraduate degree and previous graduate credit (in English or with translation). Transcripts must be complete (e.g., if currently enrolled, work-in-progress coursework must be included, foreign transcripts must include a grading scale, and for countries that issue, copy of degree certificate/diploma i.e., India, Nepal, etc.). The USD Graduate School and/or academic units retain the right to require credential evaluations from organizations, such as Educational Credential Evaluators/World Education Services (ECE/WES), for a student if such an evaluation is deemed necessary.
  3. Successful completion of a baccalaureate degree or an equivalent degree from an institution with institutional accreditation for that degree. Though no specific major is required, adequate undergraduate preparation in social, health, or biological sciences is recommended. A minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 on conferred degree and/or graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, based on a 4.0 scale, on all graduate coursework.
  4. Applicants with degrees from countries other than the United States who have obtained a high school diploma, undergraduate, or graduate degree from an institutionally accredited American college or university or from an accredited institution in the approved list  of English-speaking countries are not required to submit an approved English proficiency exam score. For all other applicants with degrees from other countries, a minimum score of 79 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT), 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT), 8.5 on the TOEFL Essentials, 6.0 on the IELTS Academic, 53 on the PTE, or 110 on Duolingo is required for graduate admission. 
  5. Applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose or goal statement. Statement of purpose for studying Public Health (include career plans relative to the Master of Public Health).

Additional Program Admission Requirements:

  1. Two (2) letters of recommendation are required.
  2. Successful completion of a criminal background check upon acceptance.

Master of Science in Health Sciences, Applied Behavior Analysis Program Description:

Prepare for careers in education and behavioral health settings as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®). This 2-year Masters’ degree program is ideally suited for those seeking professional training in the science of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and preparation for passing the National BCBA exam. BCBAs provide systematic, evidence-based services to promote socially significant skill acquisition and address behaviors that interfere with successful functioning. The application of ABA is far-reaching, as all service industries and organizations are tasked with managing the behaviors of individuals or groups. Become a leader in educational or behavioral health settings where behavior analysts support individuals of all ages and are key interdisciplinary members that work alongside educators or other related health providers. Completing the USD MS in Health Sciences, with a Specialization in Applied Behavior Analysis will fulfill one of the major requirements before sitting for the national exam to become a BCBA.  Applicants to our MS of Health Sciences with a Specialization in Applied Behavior Analysis program must be aware of the other requirements that must be completed, including the completion of 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork experience hours.  Please review these additional requirements, which can be located at the Behavior Analyst Certification Board

While not necessary, recommendations from professionals who supervise, practice, or work closely within applied behavior analysis are encouraged. Recommendations should be obtained from a.) Current or recent employer/co-worker, b.) Academic/professional, and c.) Personal/character reference.
  2.  Current resume.
  3. Successful completion of a criminal background check upon acceptance.

Top candidates for the M.S. program may be selected for a second-round interview. Upon acceptance, students are required to show proof of comprehensive personal health insurance and comply with all immunization policies as required by USD Health Affairs.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Graduate Certificate Program Description:

This 2-year certificate program establishes a pathway for professionals and current students who possess or are pursuing a master’s degree or higher. BCBAs are professionals with specialized training in applied behavior analysis who provide systematic, evidence-based services to promote socially significant skill acquisition and address behaviors that interfere with successful functioning. Become a leader in an educational or behavioral health settings where behavior analysts support individuals of all ages and are key interdisciplinary members that work alongside educators or other related health providers. Successful completion of the USD ABA Certificate Program will fulfill one of the major requirements needed prior to sitting for the national exam to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.  Applicants to our program must be aware of the other requirements that must be completed including the proof of a Master’s degree or higher from an approved university and the completion of 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork experience hours.  Please review these additional requirements, which can be located at the Behavior Analyst Certification Board

Child & Adult Advocacy Studies Graduate Certificate Program Description:

Students completing the Child & Adult Advocacy Studies (CAAST) graduate certificate will be better equipped to accomplish the work of related agencies (social work, criminal justice, nursing, etc.) as they advocate on behalf of victims and survivors of maltreatment. The certificate focuses on interdisciplinary, ethical, realistic and culturally sensitive content that provides professionals working with vulnerable populations a foundation for responding to maltreatment. Students will learn about the various disciplinary responses to maltreatment and will develop a multidisciplinary understanding of the most efficient responses.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Public Health Graduate Certificate Program Description: 

Ideal for students in health professions and related programs, this certificate will explore fundamental concepts in public health theory, epidemiology, and application of public health concepts through programming. Expand your knowledge of public health and understand the application of public health concepts in relation to clinical and related practices.

Student Learning Outcomes for the Health Sciences, Applied Behavior Analysis (M.S.)

The proposed program of study includes a course sequence verified by the Association of Behavior Analysts International (ABAI) to meet specific faculty and coursework standards. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) credentials professionals as Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). To qualify for BCBA certification, individuals must obtain an approved graduate degree, complete specific coursework in applied behavior analysis, engage in supervised practice, and pass a national examination. The proposed Health Science BCBA program would lead to an approved certification incorporating the behavior analytic coursework required for BCBA certification. All courses are aligned with the BACB Fifth Edition Task Lists9, which outline the skills and knowledge required for competent, ethical practice as a behavior analyst.

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of behaviorism, philosophical foundations, concepts, and principles of Applied Behavior Analysis.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of effective measurement, data display, and interpretation practices.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of experimental designs in the application of applied behavior analysis.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of behavioral assessment procedures.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of the application of behavior-change procedures.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge in the selection and implementation of interventions.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge and application of ethical principles, personnel supervision, and management.
