Liberal Studies (B.L.S.)

120 DEGREE HOURS

The purpose of the B.L.S. is to allow flexibility in program design and course selection for those students who are self-motivated and capable of designing a valid educational curriculum that reflects well-conceived educational or professional goals. Students seeking admission to this degree program must be prepared to outline specific reasons for choosing the program and be able to explain why their goals could not be realized through the various options of the B.A. and B.S. curriculum.

Students desiring entry to the B.L.S. program shall:

  1. file a written statement in the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office detailing the goals and objectives of the program and a tentative outline of the specific coursework to be pursued

  2. have completed at least 30 credit hours including first-year English

  3. have and maintain a 2.5 GPA

  4. obtain a faculty sponsor to act as advisor

  5. meet the requirements of either the B.A. degree or B.S. degree in addition to the regental and institutional degree requirements

Coursework MUST include:


  1. at least 80 credit hours in Arts and Sciences courses

  2. at least 45 credit hours of upper-division courses

  3. no more than 27 credit hours in any one discipline

  4. at least 42 hours of work at the University AFTER entering the program

Note: Students earning a B.L.S. may choose a minor but do not declare a major.
