Students may have individual reasons for changing the order of the following curriculum. Students must consult their advisors before completing their schedules. Students will be certified K-12 music education in the state of South Dakota by completing all the hours listed below, passing certification exams, and passing student teaching.

Students majoring in music education must concentrate in one of the following areas: Instrumental Music (12 hours)
Note:
Students must have a CGPA of 2.6 to co-register for EDFN 338 and SEED 296 and to be admitted to Teacher Education. Beginning Summer 2015, students must have a CGPA of 2.7 to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Teacher Education Requirements (30 hours)
Note:
*Piano proficiency for all majors: All music majors must pass a piano proficiency exam either through instruction in two years of class piano or through private piano lessons and/or a separate exam each semester. **Major Ensemble: All music majors must be registered for credit for a major ensemble every semester of their course study, excluding the student teaching semester. Recital: A half senior recital is required of music education majors, with the option of doing a full senior recital at the discretion of each studio teacher. When doing a half recital, students should find a partner with whom to fill out the hour concert. The student’s major teacher must approve all recital literature and preparation. USD encourages students to take 15 credits per semester or 30 credits within the year in order to graduate in 4 years. To help students complete their academic degree program in four years, we provide a sample academic plan. Please work with your academic advisor to confirm your plan. |
