Audiology Doctorate (Au.D.)


Program Overview


The program provides you with the scientific and clinical knowledge and skills needed for the practice of audiology in an environment that values teaching and clinical excellence and mentorship. Clinical experiences at the USD Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic and its affiliates include comprehensive behavioral and physiologic diagnostic and rehabilitative audiologic services with individuals aged infant through elderly, as well as specialized clinic rotations in areas including, but not limited to, audiology electrophysiology, central auditory processing disorders, cochlear implant services, fetal alcohol syndrome and autism spectrum disorders and occupational hearing services. Accredited by ASHA since 1974. Learn more at usd.edu/aud.

All graduate students working toward the completion of graduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders must meet the academic and clinical practicum requirements for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in their area of emphasis (Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology) by the end of their degree program. The ASHA requirements may be waived for international students. In addition, all graduate students are required to pass a comprehensive examination in the final semester of their graduate study. The Communication Sciences and Disorders faculty will determine the content, form, and the length of the examination. Specific academic and clinical practicum requirements for the degrees and national certification are contained in the department’s Student Handbook. Consult your advisor or the department chairperson.

* Items marked with an “*” can be taken at the undergraduate level and can range from 3-15 credit hours. If all five courses are fulfilled at the undergraduate level, the total number of credit hours required for this degree will equate to 115 credit hours. If none of the courses are fulfilled at the undergraduate level, the degree will require 130 credit hours.
