Varieties of options are available for secondary-school or others who are interested in further development of knowledge and skills necessary for leadership roles in education. Other options available include curriculum director and teacher certification. Maximum flexibility provides for meeting students’ particular interests, backgrounds, and needs.

Master of Arts, Secondary Education Plan B (non–thesis) option: Total 32–34 credit hours
- Secondary Education 24-26 credit hours
- Supporting courses 8 credit hours

- Plan A (thesis) also available. Four credit hours of thesis are required in lieu of an elective. Secondary Education: 24-26 credit hours

This program enables individuals with a Baccalaureate degree in a content area equivalent to an approved University of South Dakota teaching major to become certified at the secondary-school level in South Dakota and earn a Master of Art’s degree. Students with degrees in art, music and physical education will also have to satisfy the necessary requirements for K–12 certification. This program is unique in that students are required to complete specific undergraduate course work that is required for certification and one semester of student teaching in addition to graduate course requirements. Specific requirements are determined through a careful transcript review process. Master of Arts, Secondary Education with certification Plan B only (non–thesis only): Total 55 credit hours
- Graduate SEED core 18 credit hours
- Required supporting courses 15 credit hours
- Undergraduate SEED courses 22 credit hours
Graduate Secondary Education core + certification course work: 18 credit hours:
- Principles and Problems course or its equivalent, with appropriate content area. 3 credit hours required.
