All students complete the General Biology sequence (BIOL 151, 151L, 153, 153L) during their initial two semesters. Students who choose to pursue a major in Biology after completing the BIOL 101/103 sequence (non-science major’s courses) should see the Biology Chair for advising. Note:
If BIOL 473 taken as a core course, it cannot also fulfill a specialization requirement. Biology Electives (12 hours)
Select 12 credit hours of 300 or 400 level BIOL courses in addition to those specified in Specializations. A maximum of 6 credit hours of 300 or 400-level coursework with BIOC, MICR, or PHGY prefixes may be used as electives for the Biology major. No more than 1 credit of BIOL 495 – Teaching Internship and 3 credits of BIOL 498 – Undergraduate Research may be used to fulfill Biology elective requirements. One course from Ecology & Environmental Science, Diversity and/or Evolution Course Groups 3-4 crs
If BIOL 473 taken in the core courses, it does not fulfill this requirement. Additional Requirements for Specializations:
The courses selected within the major must also fulfill the following distribution requirements:
B= Botany Course: All students must complete one designated botany course.
L =Lab Course: All students must complete at least two upper-level Biology Lab courses. For students in the Conservative and Biodiversity Specialization these lab must include one from the Ecology & Environmental Course Group and one from the Diversity Course Group.
Z = Zoology Course: All students must complete one designated zoology course. Ecology & Environmental Science Course Group
