Program Description

This program differs from other science programs in that it has been designed specifically for middle and secondary education teachers. It is primarily a summer program at the university so that individuals who are currently engaged in teaching can complete the program. Its purpose is to better equip teachers who find they teaching areas of science in which they were not primarily educated. This degree is offered in cooperation with South Dakota State University.

Miles Koppang, Professor, Ph.D., University of North Dakota. Specialization: Analytical Chemistry, Electrochemistry as Applied to Bioanalysis, Electron-Transfer Mechanism at Electrodes, and Chemical Education.

Karen Olmstead, Professor, Ph.D., University of Maryland-College Park. Specialization: Population Ecology, Entomology, and Biostatistics.

Dan Van Peursem, Associate Professor, Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Specialization: Applied Mathematics.

David Swanson, Professor, Ph.D., Oregon State University. Specialization: Physiological Ecology of Vertebrates, Ornithology, and Vertebrate Cold Adaptation.



Admission Requirements

  • Applicant must have an undergraduate degree that has qualified the applicant for teaching in an area of science or math in a middle- and secondary-school setting.
  • Undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or graduate GPA of 3.0.
  • Applicant must have a Secondary Teacher Certificate.

- Subject to faculty approval, those who do not meet all of the criteria above may be admitted on a provisional basis.
