Admissions Information

No one may be admitted to the school superintendent’s program unless he/she has four years of teaching experience and one year of administrative experience at the elementary or secondary school level, or both, on a valid teacher certificate.

The student’s program is comprised of two parts: (1) the major field of at least 47 credit hours and (2) supporting courses. Of the supporting courses, at least 15 hours of credit must be earned from other graduate courses as determined by the student’s advisory committee. Additional supporting courses may be taken outside the field of education, and are generally recommended. The listed courses include those at both the Master’s degree and the Doctoral degree levels.

Each student, during the last 60 hours of graduate work, must have administrative experience in the work of the school superintendent. This experience must be under the supervision of the University staff and may be taken with or without credit. The requirement may be waived if the candidate presents evidence of successful experience as a school superintendent, an assistant superintendent, or a secondary school, middle school, or elementary school principal that devoted at least 50 percent of his/her time to administration.

Doctor of Education, Superintendent Total: 90-95 credit hours with a minimum of 60 credit hours beyond a conferred master’s degree and a minimum of 30 credit hours beyond a conferred master’s degree and specialist’s degree.
