Year One - Fall (12 credit hours)

• COUN 755 - Human Development and Psychosocial Intervention 3 cr
• COUN 761 - Counseling Theories & Socio-Cultural Foundations 3 cr ^
• COUN 786 - Pre-Practicum 1 to 3 cr (3 credit hours required) ^
• COUN 862 - Administration of Counseling Services in Educational Settings 3 cr ^

Year One - Spring (12 credit hours)

*Practicum Application is due the semester before Practicum course.

All students are also required to participate in 10 hours of a group experience before they can graduate. This is typically done during the same semester as COUN 766 .

*Students must take their comprehensive exams in the semester before internship.

• COUN 725 - Counseling Issues- Family, Children, and Adolescents 3 cr
• COUN 731 - Counseling Issues in Culture, Diversity, and Advocacy 3 cr
• COUN 780 - Crisis Intervention in Professional Counseling 3 cr ^

Year Two - Spring (9 credit hours)

*Students must pass comps before they can begin Internship.

Year Two - Summer (6 credit hours)

*School Counseling students are required to take all courses in-person during the first semester.

• COUN 740 - Psychopharmacology for the Nonmedical Mental Health Professional 3 cr

• SPED 703 - Education of Persons With Exceptional Needs 3 cr

• SPED 780 - Assessment of Persons With Disabilities 3 cr

Notes:

Students who plan to take positions as a certified school counselor outside of SD are advised to check with the Dept. of Education in the state they plan to seek certification to see if any additional “state specific” course requirements might be necessary for certification.

INED 511 - South Dakota Indian Studies (C)  (also INED 411 undergraduate) -This course is beneficial for South Dakota but this is not required for graduation, Offered Year-round; online and face-to face.
