Doctor of Philosophy in Computational Science and Statistics


The doctoral program is offered in cooperation with South Dakota State University (SDSU). Students may take courses at SDSU if appropriate to their research. Consult the departmental web site for current information about the program (http://www.usd.edu/csci).

Doctor of Philosophy in Computational Science and Statistics: Total 60 credit hours*


  • Computational Science & Statistics core 15 credit hours
  • Dissertation Research 36 credit hours
  • Dissertation support electives 9 credit hours
  • Note: No credit will be granted on the Program of Study for a course with a grade of ‘C’ or lower.

* 60 credit hours required of students who already have M.S. or M.A. in an appropriate field.  A 90 credit-hour program is required of students admitted directly from a baccalaureate program.

Required Dissertation Research Credits


Required Dissertation Support Electives: 9 credit hours


Dissertation Support Electives may be taken from a single discipline or several disciplines related to Computational Science and/or Statistics. Electives are available from Computational Science (CSS), Computer Science (CSC), Mathematics (MATH), Statistics (STAT), Biology (BIOL), Biochemistry (BIOC), or other related disciplines as approved by the student’s advisory committee for the Ph.D. program.
