Ph.D. students must complete 54 credit hours of course work beyond the M.A.

Ph.D. Literary Studies: Critical: Total 54 credit hours


  • English Ph.D. core 6-9 credit hours
  • Critical specialization courses 21 credit hours
  • Criticism courses 6 credit hours
  • English electives 3-6 credit hours
  • Dissertation 15 credit hours

Ph.D. Literary Studies: Creative: Total 54 credit hours


  • English Ph.D. core 6-9 credit hours
  • Creative specialization courses 18 credit hours
  • Criticism courses 3 credit hours
  • Critical specialization courses 9-12 credit hours
  • Dissertation 15 credit hours

Note


Students who have satisfied the Linguistics/Old English requirement at the Master’s level may take a program elective or an additional course from the Critical Track specialization core.

One 3-credit seminar designated as an “applied theory” course must also be included in the 18 hours required.

Other graduate courses, including Directed Research and Independent Study classes, may be included as electives with the approval of the Graduate Coordinator and the student’s committee.

In addition to course work, doctoral students must satisfy departmental requirements for proficiency in one foreign language, must pass comprehensive written and oral examinations, and must defend their dissertation.
