    Description Physical Therapy Examination is presented during the second semester of the first professional year. The students will use the knowledge acquired in Human Anatomy. The content of the course is in the area of Tests and Measures including 1) goniometry of the extremity joints and spine, 2) manual muscle testing 3) cranial nerve testing, and 4) sensory testing.

    Description This course is required of all physical therapy students enrolled in year I of the professional course of study. The study of the role of the physical therapist as a health care practitioner interacting within the context of the health care environment is emphasized. Relationships between physical therapists and patients, clients, families, caregivers, health care providers, and colleagues in the practice setting are discussed. The role of effective communication skills, interpersonal skills, professionalism, and ethical decision making in the patient care process is addressed. Written communication and medical documentation as well as patient advocacy and patient education responsibilities of the physical therapist are discussed.

  • PHTH 718 - PATHOPHYSIOLOGY


    3-4credit hour(s)

    Description The course begins with an overview of cell injury, inflammation, and repair.  Fundamentals of pathophysiology of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and nervous systems are presented from various perspectives: etiology; pathogenesis; signs and symptoms; diagnosis, including laboratory tests; and treatment options including pharmacological intervention.  Emphasis in placed on identifying “red flags” that would indicate to a physical therapist that treatment may be contraindicated or referral to another health care provider is warranted.  Multiple formats including lecture, discussion and problem solving scenarios are used to assist students in making clinical correlations.

  • PHTH 720 - DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS

    Description This is a required course for all year I physical therapy students. Prerequisites include successful completion of all prior course work.  This course is designed to instruct physical therapy students in medical/systemic conditions whose signs and/or symptoms can present as neurological, muscular, &/or skeletal problems.  Students will learn appropriate examination skills designed to assist the student in screening procedures to aid in patient assessment.  Disease epidemiology, patient/client interview, systems review process, and nutritional aspects of disease will be discussed.  Certain diseases associated with specific organ systems; as well as, diseases common to geriatric and adolescent populations will be covered.

    Description This course examines perceptual, motor, and sensory contributions to feedforward and feedback postural control, balance, and movement strategies and promotes critical thinking as students use their understanding to develop educated interventions for movement pathologies with neurologic origins.  Specific neurologic pathologies are introduced as patient examples of movement dysfunction from which students will develop and plan treatment strategies.

    Description This course is a required course offered to the Year II Physical Therapy students.  The course presents didactic material in the study of prosthetics and orthotics.  Students learn to examine the patient/client for whom the use of prosthetics and/or orthotics is applicable.  Students participate in examination, evaluation and treatment of individuals who require the use of upper and/or lower extremity prosthetics and orthotics.  Students are educated about various materials and biomechanical components of prosthetic and orthotic devices.  Students participate in clinical decision-making regarding the clinical uses of prosthetic and orthotic devices.

  • PHTH 783 - QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS

    Description This is an interdisciplinary course in qualitative and quantitative data analysis. Students will be introduced to a variety of qualitative analytic procedures and will complete a thematic analysis of original narrative data. In addition, students will learn to set up a research database, implement the appropriate statistical analyses using statistical software and interpret the outcomes. Topics will include, but are not limited to, thematic analysis, grounded theory procedures, descriptives, frequencies, t-tests, analysis of variance, correlation, regression, and chi-square analyses. This is a required course for students enrolled in the Occupational Therapy Program and the Physical Therapy Program.
