The Department of Art seeks to encourage personal and creative growth and to prepare the student for a career in the visual arts. The programs of study offer aesthetic, scholarly, historical and technical instruction. Visual art processes, application, and methods are practiced in studio courses, leading to professional preparedness in the visual arts or design. Exploration of interdisciplinary possibilities and new technologies is encouraged. It is the goal of each program of study and specialization to guide students toward understanding of the creation and analysis of visual art and design. A degree in art can prepare students for a graduate program in art and for careers in art education, in graphic design, as a practicing artist, and in related fields including arts management, art therapy and museumology.

Student Learning Outcomes for Art (B.F.A.)

  1. Students will be able to systematically explore issues, objects or works through the collection and analysis of evidence that results in informed conclusions or judgments, and break down complex topics or issues into parts to gain a better understanding of them. 
  2. Students will engage in purposeful, ongoing learning activities that improve their knowledge, skills and competence in their personal and professional lives. 
  3. Students will be able to demonstrate cognitive, effective, and behavioral skills that support effective and appropriate interaction in a variety of cultural contexts. 
  4. Students will comprehensively explore issues, ideas, artifacts and events before accepting or formulating an opinion or conclusion, and combine or synthesize existing ideas, images or expertise in original ways reflecting a high degree of innovation, divergent thinking, and risk taking.

Student Learning Outcomes for Art Education (B.F.A.)

  1. Art majors will demonstrate satisfactory skill in assessment of the fundamental concepts of Art related to composition and design in the visual arts by scoring on average a majority “pass” on the Art Faculty Assessment Rubric from the Student Portfolio Reviews. 
  2. The student will identify representative cultures, styles and eras of art history and appreciate them as a continuity of human expression. 
  3. The student will utilize knowledge of art, art materials, techniques and human experiences to create, interpret, critique and evaluate their own and others art products. 
  4. The student will learn and apply methods and techniques of the professional field of Art Education and a studio major.
