105-106 Major Hours, 129-130 Degree Hours

Students may have individual reasons for changing the order of the following curriculum. Students must consult their advisors before completing their schedules. Students will be certified K-12 music education in the state of South Dakota by completing all the hours listed below, passing certification exams, and passing student teaching.

Majors must select one of the following groups (11-12 hours)

Students majoring in music education must concentrate in one of the following areas:

Note:

*Piano proficiency for all majors: All music majors must pass a piano proficiency exam either through instruction in two years of class piano or through private piano lessons and/or a separate exam each semester. (majority of students enter the program with piano proficiency and do not require this course, students that take this course use extra hours towards free electives)

**Major Ensemble: All music majors must be registered for credit for a major ensemble every semester of their course study, excluding the student teaching semester.

***Recital: A half senior recital is required of music education majors, with the option of doing a full senior recital at the discretion of each studio teacher. When doing a half recital, students should find a partner with whom to fill out the hour concert. The student’s major teacher must approve all recital literature and preparation.
